摘要
In a 2005 national survey commissioned by New California Media (now New
American Media), pollster Sergio Bendixen found that 45 percent of African
Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Native Americans prefer ethnic
media to mainstream media. These 29 million primary consumers of
ethnic media represent 13 percent of the US adult population. This percentage
and the long history of ethnic media in the USA – the year 2008, for example,
will mark the 200th anniversary of the first ethnic newspaper, El Misisip´ı –
might lead scholars to believe that there is an abundance of studies of
ethnic media in the USA, but that is far from the truth. Scholarship on
US ethnic media is still scarce, dispersed, and hard to find.
The series of books, Ethnic Media in America, edited by Guy T. Meiss and
Alice A. Tait, fills this gap with a timely collection of contemporary essays and
research articles on ethnic media in a single work. The series is intended to move
away from the mere study of media portrayals of ethnic groups – something that
has already been incorporated into the journalism and mass communications
curriculum in the last 25 years – to focus more on the ethnic media organizations
themselves, the messages they produce, and the way audiences respond to
those messages – something that has yet to be incorporated in a more systematic
way into the scholarship and curriculum of media studies.
